About Us

imagesChildren’s Harbor Montessori School was originally founded in 1976 by a group of Staten Island parents. In 1978, the school moved to Sung Harbor Cultural Center with hopes of enhancing the arts curriculum.

From 1978 to present, we have remained in Snug Harbor Cultural Center, committed to our role as art educators and promoters. During this time we have developed as a viable group within Snug Harbor and as a school with a solid reputation.

As we continue to grow and strengthen, we hope that all parents will help us toward improvement. The school was formed around the caring of its’ members. It is not static but always developing, growing and reflecting. Our school was founded on and moves forward with strong parental participation.

Children’s Harbor Montessori School is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. We are chartered as an educational corporation by the NYS Board of Regents, and licensed by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Bureau for Child Care. We are also an Associate Member School with the American Montessori Society (AMS).

Educational Philosophy

As a Montessori School, our philosophy is concerned with the development of the total child. This includes attention to their social, cognitive, emotional, creative, and physical needs with all aspects being given equal consideration.

It is our goal to help children develop a positive self-image, self-reliance and independence in a structured educational program that also encourages the creative ability of each child.

We encourage the recognition and appreciation of individual differences. We foster caring, consideration and respect for others, while providing opportunities for cooperation and sharing. We hope that children will become aware of themselves as individuals and as part of their community. Our philosophy extends beyond the child to the parents. We are committed to supporting good parenting. We provide forums, workshops and discussion groups to exchange ideas and information on child development and good parenting skills.

The concepts of family and support are highly valued. We recognize the importance of these values and strive to reflect this in our programming for both our children and our parents.
